Central Sanskrit University (CSU, Delhi)

Central Sanskrit University (CSU), New Delhi (Formerly known as Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan) is Deemed to be a University under the Ministry of Education, Government of India created by act of Parliament. 


The Central Sanskrit University has the unique distinction of being the largest and the only multi-campus language university in the world. The Central Sanskrit University also has the privilege of acting as the nodal agency for the implementation of Sanskrit-related policies & and schemes of the Government of India. In that capacity, the university works in close coordination with the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Basic Objectives of the University :

To provide teaching, research and extension facilities for the propagation of the Sanskrit language and to expand and promote other branches of knowledge, to make special provision for integrated courses in the humanities, social sciences and sciences in its educational programmes; To take appropriate measures to promote innovations in teaching and learning process and inter-disciplinary studies and research; To educate and train the new generation for overall development, promotion, preservation and research in the field of Sanskrit and Sanskrit traditional subjects.

Important work :
To achieve its objectives, the Central Sanskrit University has the following major programs and Engaged in Activities:

  • Establishment of campuses in various states.

  • Teaching Sanskrit through traditional method at secondary, undergraduate, graduate and post graduate levels and Conducting and coordinating research work for the degree of Vidyavaridhi (Ph.D.) in various areas of Sanskrit

  • Conducting teacher training at Shiksha Shastri (B.Ed) and Shikshacharya (M.Ed) level.

  • Collaborating with other organizations in sponsoring joint projects of common interest.

  • Establishment of Sanskrit libraries, manuscript museums and editing and publication of rare manuscripts and important texts.

  • To award degrees and diplomas/certificates to persons who pass the prescribed examinations by satisfactorily completing the approved prescribed course/coursework.

  • To institute and award visitorships, fellowships, scholarships, prizes and medals.

  • To conduct distance education programs through Muktswadhyapeeth.

  • To implement the schemes of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India as a central agency for the promotion of Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit.
